This is a suspense-filled, tragic story that takes place in the city of St. Albans, England, and focuses on a seasoned detective inspector who attempts to solve mysterious murder cases, all while having her motherly instincts tested to the limits of endurance. DI Maggie Dent, who works at St. Albans Police Station, is working on a homicide case involving a university student when her daughter, Charlotte Dent, suddenly goes missing. This devastates the entire Dent family, friends, acquaintances, and Charlotte’s boyfriend, Peter King. Having previously lost her son Jonathan, Maggie is left to grasp at straws and is at her wits' end. Her fears come true, and now Maggie is left with no choice but to find out who the mysterious killer is, by all means necessary. However, the death cases reveal a string of sinister connections—and past events—that are deeply rooted in St. Albans. Will Maggie find out who the perpetrator is? What secrets lie in this historic city? Readers are bound to find themselves wholly captivated while remaining glued to the edges of their seats! A positive aspect I truly admire about this story is the undiluted emotional intensity the author plucks at the readers’ heartstrings. I can almost see myself within the picturesque world filled with themes of sleuthwork, tragedy, mysterious culprits, and family bonds. The interview interactions among the characters are truly impeccable and heavy; especially the session with Justin Taylor and that of Peter King. I also love the mysterious vibe the author creates around the killer by describing them in third-person pronouns. The characters are well-planned, the thickening plot scenes unforgettable, the investigations very intense, and the overall emotional rollercoaster is just awesome. I see Maggie Dent as a strong, determined, serious, and level-headed woman with little or no tolerance for illicitness. Her reputation is built on a sound foundation of discipline, excellence, and perseverance. Aside from her dislike for DI Christine Fellows, Maggie is approachable and devoted to her work. Her vulnerable moments, especially after her daughter goes missing, indicate how much she truly cares for her family. Her sense of tragedy and loss has made her very introspective and mentally resilient. The author truly depicted Maggie’s ups and downs very well. Overall, I love how the author blends hardcore suspense with family orientation. This book reminds me of another book I recently read named “Whispers In The Fog,” where the sleuthlike protagonist’s child is threatened by dangerous forces while she is grieving her husband’s death, and she has to investigate who the mysterious people are. The story also makes the reader have an emotional understanding with federal agents as well as ordinary people going through loss or suffering. I do not have any dislikes or negatives to offer about the book, nor did I encounter any grammatical errors or typographical mistakes while reading. It is well-written and excellently edited. Its context and style are emotionally intense, unputdownable, and incredible, and therefore I rate it 5-stars. I recommend this book to all adult readers who love thrillers. Readers must take note, however, because of the presence of some profanity.
