This is a captivating tale that recounts the story of how a coffee shop in a quiet town becomes the center of an ongoing investigative meeting concerning an impromptu homicide. Stella Ray, a seasoned caterer and sleuth based in Willowberry, witnesses the horticultural hostess Vivienne Hartwell-Cross’s demise during an annual garden tour. Against Detective Ben Morgan’s orders, Stella gets involved in the alleged homicidal case, along with her friends and her bulldog Rex. Vivienne’s old acquaintances and associates begin to resurface, and not all of them are friendly or grief-struck. In a small town where everyone knows each other to a degree, Stella’s curiosity remains inevitable. What secrets remain hidden in the peaceful town of Willowberry? Who killed Vivienne? Will Stella and her crew get to the bottom of this? Interested readers are yet to find out in this sensational page-turner! I truly admire the author’s writing style; it is elegant, poetic, and engaging. I love engaging thrillers, and this one has certainly marveled me with its flawless lack of profanity. The character developments are intricate and well-done, with a healthy dose of psychology, intellect, and body language expertise in their interactions. The narration is engaging and courteous, and readers of all ages—teenagers and adults—will find this book impressive. Rex is by far my favorite character in this story. I like how the author humanizes Stella’s dog; Rex is very sleuthy, sagacious, professional, and very helpful in this homicide case. He truly has the prowess of a well-trained police dog. I wonder what incredible insights and experiences Rex has to share if he ever gains the ability to communicate with humans, just like the character Yogi in a book I recently read. I think Stella Ray is very attentive, meticulous, and relentless in pursuing mystery cases. As the protagonist, she shares similar traits to Rose: being clairvoyant and analytical at heart. Together with Rex, Maude, Richard, Cara, and even Detective Ben, they make a great sleuthing team. The book’s content is very nice and comprehensible. The author loves to add similes to each character, portraying their uniqueness and how they relate to each other. A relevant example when the author focuses on Richard’s perennially tough and succinct relationship with Maude. Overall, I find this book enjoyable and do not mind reading it again. I also think that the ending is well-justified. A question that still lingers in my mind is whether Stella and her pals are undercover detectives. I do not have any dislikes to offer about the book, nor did I encounter any grammatical errors or typographical mistakes while reading. It is well-written and excellently edited, and it also has an attractive cover page. Its context and style are truly emotionally intense, fantastic, and powerful, and therefore I do not hesitate to give it a 5-star rating. I recommend this book to all readers who love psychological thrillers that involve sleuthlike dogs.
